Abortion in Popular Culture by
Abortion in Popular Culture: A Call to Action brings together scholars who examine depictions of abortion in film, television, literature, and social media. By examining texts ranging from classic television series such as Maude and Roseanne and recent films such as Never Rarely Sometimes Always and Unpregnant to dystopian novels and social-media campaigns, the essays analyze narrative styles, rhetorical strategies, and cinematic techniques, all of which shape cultural attitudes toward abortion. They also analyze cultural shifts, including the willingness or reluctance of networks, cable channels, and filmmakers to acknowledge changing trends in reproductive health such as medication abortion and the role that abortion plays in family planning. As a whole, however, the essays argue that popular culture can play a significant role in destigmatizing abortion by including a wider range of narratives and doing so with nuance and empathy. With reproductive rights under attack in the United States, each essay is a call to action for writers, producers, directors, showrunners, authors, and musicians to use their platforms to tell more positive and accurate stories about abortion.
Abortion in the European Union by
A medical act with multiple social, psychological and emotional implications, abortion is a socio-political issue in its own right. Access to the right to abortion is subject to tension, opposition and conflict between different actors or ideas with sometimes extremely antagonistic positions. While Europe is the continent where access to safe and legal abortion seems to be closest to international medical and health recommendations, authorities in several countries are challenging this access. In general, attempts to restrict access, whether successful or not, highlight the possible reversibility of the right to access abortion. As a result, the right to abortion remains a highly sensitive issue of public and political debate. This book compares the legal regime of abortion in the different EU countries and the effectiveness of the right of access to abortion. Moreover, it traces the evolution of the political debate while drawing on the concrete example of Belgium. This examination highlights the extent to which the calls for the right to abortion and the institutional recognition of this right are shaped by various actors within national and international networks. The positions and framing of the issues by these 'pro-choice' and 'pro-life' actors, including the Holy See, are carefully analysed. The book also examines the discrepancy between the citizenship approach adopted by research on sexual and reproductive rights and the language of human rights used by activists to legitimise themselves as interlocutors in political deliberation and to justify their claims. This book provides a comparative look at the discourses and practices of abortion rights across Europe.

What does it mean to be a good man? To be a good father, or a good partner? A good brother, or a good friend? In this clear-sighted analysis, social historian Ivan Jablonka offers a re-examination of the patriarchy and its impact on men. Ranging widely across cultures, from Mesopotamia to Confucianism to Christianity to the revolutions of the eighteenth century, Jablonka uncovers the origins of our patriarchal societies. Ulla Bjerne, Cora Sandel, Thit Jensen, Agnesvon Krusenstjerna, Hulda Lütken, Karen Blixen, Karen Aabye, Maria Wine, Tove Jansson, Ester Nagel, Sara Lidman og Inga Ehrström. Deres bøger provokerede voldsomt i deres samtid – det kunne ikke være anderledes, når de udfordrede normerne for, hvordan kvinder burde leve i deres tid, og hvad man måtte skrive om. De insisterede på retten til at elske dem, de ville, og at være meget mere og meget andet end hustru og mor i en tid, hvor de traditionelle værdier omkring moder- og ægteskabet blomstrede.

Annie Thora levde med voldsomme smerter i mer enn 15 år. Smertene kunne vært unngått om noen hadde oppdaget at hun hadde endometriose, en vanlig kvinnesykdom. Cathrine fikk høre at hun innbilte seg de kroppslige plagene sine. Først etter flere år som kasteball i systemet, ble det oppdaget at hun hadde en alvorlig fysisk lidelse.
