Edit a reference style
It is possible to edit reference styles. But be aware that changes can make it difficult for others to understand your references.
This example applies to the Vancouver standard.
The changes provide square brackets around in text references, and a straight margin in the bibliography.
In Endnote:
- In the "Tools" menu, select "Output styles" -> "Open Style Manager"
- Find the reference style (e.g. Vancouver) you want to edit and select "Edit"
- Under "Citation" -> "Templates". Change parentheses to [ ]
- Under "Bibliography" -> "Layout"
- In the bottom right corner set "Hanging Indent" to "All paragraphs".
- Save the style via the menu "File" -> "Save as"
- Open your new style in Word, "Select another style..."
In the case of group work, all participants must make the same changes to the reference style.
