Zotero: Install and Sync


Download Zotero from zotero.org using either Google Chrome or Firefox.​

When you have finished installation of Zotero, you find:

  • a shortcut to your Zotero library at your desktop
  • a "Save to Zotero" icon in the tool bar of your browser 

Connect to Microsoft Word - Step 1

Connect your Zotero library to Word by making the following steps:

  1. Open your local Zotero library
  2. Choose "Edit" - "Preferences" 
  3. Choose "Cite" - "Word Processors" - "Install Microsoft Word Add-in"​

Open Word and look out for the Zotero menu:

If the menu is not there, restart your computer!

If it is still not there, check if you need to update Word.

Sync - Step 1

The references you are collecting using Zotero are saved at your pc. You can sync your references with zotero.org. 

There are three reasons why you should do so:

  1. To make a safe copy of your references
  2. To access your references from another PC
  3. To share your references with others

First steps are:

  1. Register at https://www.zotero.org/user/register
  2. Log in to zotero.org

Sync - Step 2

In your zotero library at your PC :


  1. "Edit" - "Preferences"  
  2. In "Data Syncing" insert your Zotero username and password

To start syncing, activate the green "Sync with Zotero.org" arrow:

When you have finished syncing, the content of your library at zotero.org and at your local PC is identical:
