As an academic field media studies belongs partly to the humanities, partly to the social sciences. Media studies is based on theory, analysis, and history; but also has a practical dimension. Students of media studies use relevant aestethical and psychological theories in their analyses of the creative mechanisms of film, TV and the computer media, and they examine the role of the audio-visual medias in modern society. Additionally, they also aim for a practical understanding of audio-visual presentation.
Recently, media studies have undergone great changes with the emergence of new types of media and new user behavioural patterns.
